Apprenticeships at Cowes Harbour Commission, Isle of Wight


Cowes Harbour Commission is offering an exciting ‘Marine Operative Apprenticeship', providing a great opportunity for the right candidate to gain extensive knowledge and a valuable qualification in a challenging and rewarding industry. Applications are open until 16th March 2018.

Potential candidates must be aged between 18-24 years of age to qualify for the scheme.

What is it?
This apprenticeship will cover all aspects of the commercial and statutory operations that are associated with a busy Harbour. The selected candidate will gain knowledge in elements such as marina and boatyard operations, major event organisation and commercial operations including many aspects of maintenance on moorings, quays and vessels. As well as the aforementioned, the candidate will gain an industry recognised award as a result of successfully completing an apprenticeship that is assessed in the workplace only (an NVQ). No days required at college and you earn while you learn!

What's involved?
To achieve the apprenticeship the student must carry out the following:

• Complete a portfolio of evidence of competence
• A Personal, Learning and Thinking Skills (PLTS) booklet
• An Employee and Employers Rights booklet
• ICT, Maths and English as a functional skill (this is waived if the apprentice has achieved C grade and above in these subjects for GCSEs)

The apprenticeship takes between 18-24 months to achieve and is designed with a mix of learning outcomes, some relating to underpinning knowledge and others to competence. The students can gain essential experience working with many different types of vessel; from multi-million pound motor cruisers and racing yachts to small tenders and RIBs. They will be involved in lifting and moving boats and yachts, mooring and berthing boats and yachts, moving loads in boatyards, and maintaining marinas and boatyard equipment, all whilst learning how to deliver excellent customer service.

The student will be expected to complete the 10 mandatory Units (36 QCF credit points) and at least five optional Units (at least 23 QCF credit points).

• Deliver Customer Service

• Move and Store Boats and Yachts Ashore
• Prepare Boats and Yachts for Moving
• Moor and Berth Boats and Yachts
• Prepare Docks and Slipways for the Receiving of Boats and Yachts
• Maintain Equipment for the Lifting and Support of Yachts and Boats
• Maintain Marina Pontoons
• Clean Boat and Yacht Hulls
• Maintain Records Regarding Vessels in Marinas and Boatyards

Training will be provided by experienced staff from all across CHC’s sites. Students will be assessed by a college assessor that will undertake on-site reviews with the candidate on a 6-12 weekly cycle.

You will start on the Government’s minimum wage (relevant to your age). Once you have proven yourself to be competent in the basic skills required by the role, there will be an opportunity to have your wage increased.

Am I eligible:
You must be aged 18 – 24 and have passed GCSE Maths and English at grade C or above. Other qualifications may be considered, but as well as the course you would have to pass Maths, English and ICT as a functional skill.
